Dear BCE Families,

Reminder ~ Just as a reminder that there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday.

BINGO ~ Please join me TONIGHT for Family BINGO Night!  The doors will open at 6:00 and BINGO will start promptly at 6:30 in the MP.  There is no charge to play Bingo.  Additionally, there will be pizza and dessert available for purchase.  Proceeds from these food items will support 5th grade Science Camp.  Thank you to our Parent Club for sponsoring this fun event.

Congratulations! ~ Clive Wilson from Mrs. Muirhead’s class and Zach Schipper from Mr.Vahradian’s class, will be representing BCE at the Santa Cruz County Spelling Bee on January 26.  Dante Clark from Mr. Koenig’s class will be our alternate if one of the other boys isn’t able to participate.   Congratulations to our three top spellers and all our 4th and 5th graders that participated in the BCE Spelling Bee.

Additional Parking Concerns ~ The parking area on Redwood Avenue behind the school continues to be a concern.  Please remember Redwood Avenue provides emergency access to BCE.  There have been cars parked in front of the fence that we would need to open in an emergency.  The safety of our BCE students is a priority for all of us. Thank you for your vigilance in this matter.

Parenting Class ~ It’s a bit of a drive, but a wonderful (and free) parenting class will be offered in Capitola. The topic addressed in this class is Teaching Children Social Skills and the focus is on supporting families with children with special needs.  Please refer to the attached flyer here for additional information.

Free GED Classes ~ SLVUSD is pleased to offer free GED classes to our community.  Please read the attached flyer here for additional information.

Job Opening ~ SLVUSD is currently hiring for a Senior Custodian at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary (full-time) and a Maintenance Specialist-HVAC (full-time).  We are also looking to hire substitutes (part-time) for Student Nutrition Services.  If you are interested, you can download an application from the District website and submit it to the Human Resources Department at the District Office (325 Marion Ave, Ben Lomond).  You can also apply online at

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

Tonight is Game Night!  Join us from 6:30-8:30 PM in the MP Room for this fun and free event.  Doors open at 6.  The game is BINGO and there are prizes for winners.  There will be pizza and baked goods for sale as well as a hot cocoa bar with all proceeds going to 5th grade Science camp.  Be sure to come early because items are only available while supplies last.  In our efforts to be more green the parents club asks that you bring your reusable cups for water or mugs if you want to partake in the hot cocoa bar.  Thanks for your help!

Our next school event to prepare for is the Family Dance on Friday, February 15 from 6-8 PM.  There will be drinks and baked goods for sale with profits to benefit 5th grade Science Camp.  We had a dance last year and it was a huge success!  We will need chaperones as well as people to help decorate, set-up and clean-up.  Email us at

Mark your calendars!

The next Family Dinner Night is Thursday January 31 at Tae’s Edo Sushi.  A portion of the day’s profits will go to the 2nd grade.

Jenna Sue’s will be having a Family Coffee Day on Thursday, February 7 with a portion of the day’s profits to benefit 5th grade science camp.

Our next Parent Club meeting is Thursday, February 7, 6-8 PM in the library.  Babysitting and light snacks provided.  Come be a part of the fundraising efforts, event planning and school related discussions. For those of you who cannot make nightly meetings BCE Parent Club invites you to Parent Club Meeting Recap on Wednesday, February 13 at 1:30 pm. It’s early-out so join us on uppers, rain or shine to hear about what was discussed, bring up your thoughts and ideas and meet new people.
