Dear BCE Families,

2019-20 School Calendar ~ Click here to view the 2019-2020 school calendar. Your student’s school attendance is one of the key markers for success. Thank you for planning family vacations that are aligned with the school calendar.

Welcome Back! ~ Our 5th graders returned from Science Camp today!  They were tired and some were a bit smelly, but there were lots of smiles and stories to share.  Thanks to everyone who made this trip a reality for our kids.

Celebrate! ~ Our Amazing BCE Parent Club Co-Presidents, Kat Gafford and Chrissy Dahl, were recognized at the School Board meeting on Wednesday evening.  Kat and Chrissy were the recipients of the “We Are SLV” award for their work as Co-Presidents of the BCE Parent Club and all their tireless dedication to supporting BCE.

Our School Board also recognized Ollin Bates, Sophia Hoogner, Damian Spracklen and Chloe Ryssemus for their achievement  at the Santa Cruz County Science and Engineering Fair.

Congratulations SLVMS ~ Congratulations to Shannon Calden and our own SLV Middle School! Due to its sustained progress, SLVMS has been selected to retain its designation as a California School to Watch.  Here is a quote from State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, which speaks to the importance of this honor.

"These middle schools make a great impact on students, and I want to thank the staff, administrators, teachers, and parents at these schools for ensuring all students get the education they need to realize their potential," Thurmond said. "These schools study and support students’ needs, which helps close achievement gaps and creates a better future for these young students."

What lucky 5th graders we have to be able to advance to such a wonderful middle school!

CAASPP Testing ~ We are fast approaching the time for State Testing for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.  Please read a letter, click here for English or here for Spanish, to find out more about CAASPP.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for Fall 2019 is open. Visit the BCE office to pick up a registration packet and sign up for a spot to attend one of our three Kindergarten orientations and tours. Tours will take place at 9 am on March 29, April 23 and May 17 and are for adults only. To begin the registration process, please plan on bringing your child’s birth certificate, current immunization record and proof of residence. Questions? This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

Walk/Jog: Thank you for supporting our Walk/Jog-a-thon last week - the kids did great! We are so grateful to all our volunteers who help support this annual event.  Money is being collected until Friday March 29- just before Spring Break. Please turn in your pledges! These funds are critical to programs like the Spectra arts program we enjoyed this week.  Our goal is $50 per child if possible. Remember donations are tax deductible and make your checks out to BCE Parents Club.

*Staff Appreciation Week is next week March 25-29.  A handout should have come home this week regarding the planning for the event.  Your class coordinator’s name is in front of the classroom, and here is their contact information in case you cannot get to school. Contact them with questions.

URGENT YEARBOOK: Flyers went home regarding yearbook picture request. Download the TreeRing app and upload your pictures of your favorite school memories on your phone OR go to Treering.com and create your account using school code: 10152329238788. Download to Shared Pictures and choose the proper folder to make your pics available for yearbook. You can also download your child’s own personal memories for their personalized two pages in the yearbook. MARCH IS THE MONTH TO SUBMIT PICS. There are only about 100 pictures so far, so we need pics from Ice Cream Social, Halloween, class parties, field trips, Science Night, BINGO night and whatever else you have. The yearbook is what you make it. Please download your pictures ASAP.

Upcoming Event: Please mark your calendars for the rescheduled Family Dance, Friday, April 12 from 6-8 PM in the MP.  This is a free-to-attend event, but NO STUDENTS CAN BE UNACCOMPANIED. Drinks and baked goods for sale to benefit incoming 5th graders science camp!
