BearNews 1/31/2019

Dear BCE Families,

Reminder ~ Just as a reminder that there will be NO SCHOOL TOMORROW. Our amazing teachers will be participating in professional development to grow their expertise in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Rescheduled ~ The campus clean-up that was scheduled for Saturday 2/2, has been rescheduled and will take place on Sunday 2/24 from 9 am - 12:00 pm

BCE on TV! ~ Click here to watch a KSBW video about how SLVUSD is trying to address the teacher shortage and the high cost of living in the San Lorenzo Valley.  You may recognize a couple of our staff members as well as a lot of adorable students.  If the link does not work, go to and the video is under Local News.

Pennies for Patients ~ Over these next two weeks, BCE students will have the opportunity to participate in our annual Pennies for Patients drive which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  The drive will run from January 28 – February 8.  Each student will be bringing a collection box home this week and encouraged to fundraise for cancer patients.  Thank you for your support. This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity for students to see how small contributions joined together can make a generous donation to an organization that makes a difference in peoples lives.

SLVFE is looking for a Bookkeeper/Treasurer ~ San Lorenzo Valley Foundation for Education (SLVFE) seeks a Volunteer Bookkeeper/Treasurer who is enthusiastic about helping our schools and students thrive. The SLVFE brings resources to support all the schools in the district and has raised over $80,000 in the past three years. The bookkeeping entails using QuickBooks to produce monthly financial statements, tracking donations and reconciling accounts for several clubs and programs, and filing tax statements (990 EZ). Our current bookkeeper spends 4 to 8 hours per month and is ready to help you get up to speed. Thank you for considering using your talents to benefit the students in our community!  Questions? Please contact Bryan Largay at 831-234-1177 or

Valentine’s Day ~ As February rolls in we start thinking about Valentine’s Day.  Please remember that if your student brings Valentine cards for 1 student in the class, they need to bring cards for all the students in their class.  Valentine’s Day is not a day for hurt feelings and hearts.

Absences ~ If your student will be absent from school for any reason, please call the BCE Attendance Line at 831-338-2887.  This is an answer machine that picks up calls 24 hours a day.  Please call every day until your student returns and let us know how their recovery is going.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful 3-day weekend!

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

The Family Dance is on Friday, February 15 from 6-8 PM. There will be drinks and baked goods for sale with profits to benefit 5th grade Science Camp. We had a dance last year and it was a huge success! We will need chaperones as well as people to help decorate, set-up and clean-up. Email us at

Campus Beautification will take place Sunday February 24 from 12 PM-3 PM.  This volunteer events helps us earn Disneyland tickets for our Silent Auction in May. The more volunteers the more tickets we earn. Make it a family event and have your children be apart of it!

Jenna Sue’s will be having a Family Coffee Day on Thursday, February 7 with a portion of the day’s profits to benefit 5th grade science camp. You can bring a drink, or a treat,  for your favorite staff member! Just ask to see the BCE staff spreadsheet! A huge thank you to Jenna Sue, and her staff, for holding this event!

Our next Parent Club meeting is Thursday, February 7, 6-8 PM in the library. Babysitting and light snacks provided. Come be a part of the fundraising efforts, event planning and school related discussions. For those of you who cannot make nightly meetings BCE Parent Club invites you to Parent Club Meeting Recap on Wednesday, February 13 at 1:30 pm. It’s early-out so join us on uppers, rain or shine to hear about what was discussed, bring up your thoughts and ideas and meet new people.
