Bear Mail - 10/5/18

October 5, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

Halloween Costumes ~ As we turn the calendar to October, I know many students are already planning their Halloween costumes. There are a few guidelines regarding costumes.  Costumes should be in good taste and safely constructed so that they do not interfere with regular class activities.  Gruesome costumes and bloody, fake wounds are not appropriate for an elementary school.  Weapons (including fakes), skateboards and roller blades are not allowed as part of costumes.   If you are unsure, please contact your child’s teacher or the office before purchasing the costume.

Did you know???

If your student is 10 minutes late for school every day by the end of the school year they will be missing between 5 (grades 4 & 5) and (kindergarten) days of important academic instruction.

Dangerous Driving ~ I received an email from a parent earlier last week who expressed extreme concern about unsafe driving that is occurring around the school.  He relayed an incident where a driver was looking at her phone and would have hit a child crossing the street had she not listened to her mother and stopped.  Only recently a young student in our valley was killed in an accident.  Please, please, please keep your children, and all our children, safe.  Drive slowly, follow the directions of the crossing guards, avoid distractions such as phones and be on high alert for pedestrians and other vehicles.  There is nothing more important than the safety of our students.  Thank you for taking care of our school community.

The small parking area at the top of Redwood is also becoming a hazard and a dangerous area for our students.  Cars are driving too fast and drivers have been reported to be distracted by their phones. The area is so tight that visibility is limited and creates a huge safety concern. Please consider dropping off and picking up at the front of the school where we have crossing guards and and a process that helps increase your students safety.

Drive for Schools ~ Would you like to win a car or $25,000 and support BCE?  Fundraising tickets are $5.00 each or a book of 6 for $25.00.  Tickets will be available in the BCE office through October 19th. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales go straight to BCE!  Thank you for supporting our students!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Drive For Schools tickets will be on sale until October 18th. Ideally each student would sell a

Dear BCE Families,

It’s our Sesquicentennial! ~ This year BCE celebrates 150 years of educating students in the San Lorenzo Valley.  To mark this special occasion, our generous and amazing BCE Parent Club has designed (thank you Amber Jones!) and purchased a sticker for each of our families.  If they have not already, your student will soon bring home the sticker, probably in their homework folder, but possibly in the bottom of their backpack!  I already have mine on the rear window of my car.  I love showing off my pride for BCE as I drive up and down Highway 9!

Dangerous Driving ~ I received an email from a parent earlier this week who expressed extreme concern about unsafe driving that is occurring around the school.

4th Grade Families ~ If you have a 4th grader, you and your family can now get in to our National Parks for free. The initiative is called Every Kid in a Park. The goal is to get 4th grade students and their families to explore nature and discover the living history here at home and all across the nation. Every single 4th grader in the United States can receive a free family pass to the national parks.  Please click on the link below to find out how to access your free park pass.

Lost and Found ~ One of our amazing parents has volunteered to work on the lost & found area! Jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters and other item's will be checked for names once a week, and all left over items will be donated at the end of each month.  Thank you for making sure your student’s name is written on the inside collar of their outerwear as well as other items, such as lunch boxes, that they bring to school.

Perseverance Quote of the Week :

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Notes home are the primary way that we communicate with you. If you do come to campus or
are on our secret Facebook group then we have the fliers posted there as well. However, not
everyone comes to the campus or is on the group. This Monday or Tuesday you should be
getting Drive For Schools tickets in a white envelope, October calendar and October box top
collection sheets. We also have a special, complimentary sticker going home that
commemorates the school’s 150th anniversary this year.

Keep collecting those box tops! Turn box tops into your classroom teacher no later than Your
next deadline is at the end of October. The top earning class will receive a prize!
